WA Labor Government Helping People Buy Homes
The WA Labor Government is making it easier for people to buy their own homes. A new housing plan has started to help Western Australians save money when purchasing a house, apartment, or land.
Big Savings for First Home Buyers
Starting March 21, 2025, new rules will reduce or remove stamp duty (a tax paid when buying property) for first home buyers:
If you buy a house in Perth or Peel, you won’t pay any stamp duty if the house costs up to $500,000 (saving nearly $18,000).
If the house costs between $500,000 and $700,000, you will pay less stamp duty.
If you buy a house in other parts of WA, you won’t pay stamp duty for homes up to $500,000, and you’ll get discounts for homes up to $750,000.
If you buy vacant land, you won’t pay stamp duty if it costs up to $350,000 (saving almost $11,000), and you’ll get discounts for land up to $450,000.
These changes will help around 22,000 first home buyers, with 8,000 people paying no stamp duty at all when buying a home or land.
More Savings for New Apartments and Townhouses
People who buy off-the-plan apartments or townhouses (before or during construction) will also save money:
If you buy before construction starts, you won’t pay any stamp duty if the home costs up to $750,000, and you’ll get a 50% discount on stamp duty for homes between $750,000 and $850,000.
If you buy while construction is happening, you’ll get a 75% discount on stamp duty for homes up to $750,000, and a 37.5% discount for homes between $750,000 and $850,000.
These changes will last from March 21, 2025, to June 30, 2026. They will help make homes more affordable and give people more choices, especially for seniors looking to downsize.
This plan is part of the WA Labor Government’s promise to make home ownership easier and help more people buy their first home.
